Shear strength testing of consolidated claystones: breakpoint detection of shear stress versus shear displacement curves, a statistical approach

چکیده
Abstract The evaluation of shear stress versus displacement curves is in the main focus geotechnical engineering. Such curves, depending on rock assessed, consist a quasi-linear section, followed by “kick” representing peak strength, and residual part, mostly parallel to abscissa. aim present study facilitate future automatic detection these crucial characteristics take step towards replacing their visual/analogue determination via modern statistical tools. Breakpoint methods (Cross-Entropy, Change Point Model) were applied obtained from laboratory tests describing shearing along discontinuities nine Mont Terri Opalinus Claystone samples. Smooth moderately rough claystone surfaces studied. Results indicated that end rising section kick observed strength was effectively approximated with Model framework. An additional practical advantage applying tools such as breakpoint it ensures comparability results.

Shear Strength of Fiber-Reinforced Clayey Sands
Consolidated-drained triaxial compression tests were conducted to compare the stress-strain and volume change response of sands and clayey sands reinforced with discrete randomly distributed poly-propylene fibers. The influence of various test parameters such as fiber content (0.0%, 0.5% and 1.0% by weight), clay content (0%, 10% and 20% by weight), relative density (50% and 90%) and confining ...
متن کاملShear Strength of Soil
One of the most important and the most controversial engineering properties of soil is its shear strength or ability to resist sliding along internal surfaces within a mass. The stability of a cut, the slope of an earth dam, the foundations of structures, the natural slopes of hillsides and other structures built on soil depend upon the shearing resistance offered by the soil along the probable...
متن کاملNon-Linear Behavior and Shear Strength of Diagonally Stiffened Steel Plate Shear Walls
In this study, non-linear behavior of diagonally stiffened steel plate shear walls as a seismic resisting system has been investigated, and theoretical formulas for estimating shear strength capacity of the system have been proposed. Several validated analytical finite element models of steel shear walls with various stiffener dimensions are generated to verify and compare the analytical and th...
متن کاملBoundary Shear Stress in a Trapezoidal Channel
This paper focuses on a hydraulic radius separation approach used to calculate the boundary shear stress in terms of bed and wall shear stress proposed in a trapezoidal channel. The average bed and sidewall shear stress in smooth trapezoidal open channels are derived after using Guo & Julien (2005) early equations taking a part of an investigation to cover both rectangular and trapezoidal chann...
